there but not there

OUR installation, There but not There , honouring the seven men of Downham and Twiston who died in the Great War 1914-18 was completed exactly one hundred days before the anniversary of the Armistice on 11th November and will remain open until Remembrance Day. The exhibit comprises even Perspex cut-out men spread around the church in the pews that they left unoccupied one hundred years ago. At each pew there is a brief description of the fallen man and, at the back of Church, a booklet with some additional information. There is a Poppy banner at the gate inviting everyone to come inside and view the installation.

Featuring an unrivalled view across to Pendle Hill and in the heart of the Trough of Bowland AONB, Downham’s camping barn is now being run by the Downham Estate rather than the YHA. It offers an excellent budget overnight or weekend accommodation option for many types of events and celebrations, as well as being very popular with walkers, cyclists, campers and D of E groups.

The recently refurbished barn building accommodates 12 in an upstairs ‘dormitory’ room for guests who bring their own camp beds or roll mats. Below is a kitchen and sitting area with an adjoining gas heated shower and WC. Photovoltaic cells provide power for limited LED lighting (but not for phone charging) and there is a wood-burning stove with fuel available to purchase at time of booking. A gas cooker operated by a £1 coin meter is provided along with basic pots, pans, crockery and cutlery.

Outside, there is space for additional tents – the number will depend on the tent size – as well as a gas barbeque and fire pit. There is parking for approximately four cars in a layby on the immediately adjacent lane. The barn is situated just ¾ mile from the Village itself so benefits from being both accessible to the facilities – popular pub, tearoom and ice cream shop - yet private for groups.

The barn is available to hire from just £12 per person per night.  Please email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with initial enquiries, or ring the bookings secretary on 01200 441667.
