The banner was made by Messrs Skerrett of Bury, a specialist banner maker. Details about the maker have been difficult to find. A trip to Bury archive revealed just a little as did searches of trade directory
We learned a little from the obituary of Joseph Skerrett who died in 1925 at the age of 92 which puts him in the firm in 1885 when our banner was made. His funeral was attended by about 20 family members so it is possible that descendants will be able to tell us something of the firm.
Whilst at the archive in Bury we met with a representative of the Wardle and Smallbridge history group. This is part of Rochdale and they have a museum with six banners two of which are Skerrets.
An undated Bury and Elton directory lists Joseph Skerrett & Sons, banner manufacturer, artist's colourman and carver and gilder, 14 and 16 Agur Street, L Chesham.
Other information listed in 1871 Joseph Skerrett was a painter employing 5 men. In 1881 listed as a decorative artist and in 1891 he is listed as a decorative painter.
A 1909 advert in a show business paper, features him trying to sell a sixty foot circus tent complete with poles.
A 1911 entry has him listed as making silk banners and as a sign writer.
Mr Skerrett was clearly a man of many talents, employing a creative work force. His banners were bought by churches and chapels throughout the north, especially in Lancashire.

The Peoples History Museum Manchester alerted us to a Skerrett in Bolton however it is signed Skerretts of Bolton (not Bury) so we wonder was there a branch?
